As I mentioned in an earlier blog, my Doctor initially put me on Requip for my
Restless Leg Syndrome. It worked just o.k., so he put me on Klonopin -1mg. It worked
much better and when I awoke during the night, I was able to fall back asleep easier.
My Doctor is strictly medical (no natural or homepathic), but after doing alot of research, it seems Calcium and Magnesium
are helpful for Sleep and RLS. Also, most RLS patients are iron deficient, so I take a separate
Iron Supplement. The combination of The Clonazepam (generic of Klonopin) Calcium, Magnesium and Iron,
seem to work pretty well. They suggest taking a Vitamin C with the Iron as well.
I still don’t sleep entirely thru the night without being awaken, but I can get back to sleep, and I have deep sleep for 4 or 5 hours.
OTHER OPTIONS
Prescription-Mirapex- Recently I had seen this advertised all over the place for RLS, so I asked my Doctor to prescribe me
the drug. I took it twice, with horrible results. All the side-effects they have in the commercials I had. I had hallucinations,
nausea, groggy in morning, etc etc. The reason I took it the second time, was I thought the side-effects were related to the food I had the night before. I have seen on some forums, people love it.
Valerian- I tried for a while as well, but as research has documented if you don’t take the right kind of Valerian, it will help you fall asleep, but eventually wake you up thru the night (no good).
Melatonin-For me personally it really did not work, but if you see in my next blog about Seasonal Affective Disorder,
it goes far beyond taking Melatonin at night. Melatonin is a natural body hormone produced by the pineal gland. It helps to regulate the circadian rhythm. It’s recommended for use when you are suffering from jet lag, but may also be useful in other cases of sleep disruption. It doesn’t work for everyone, and has been known to cause the hangover effect the same as some of the barbiturate type drugs do. It may also interfere with the reproduction cycle, so women hoping to become pregnant shouldn’t take Melatonin.
Tylenol Pm, Advil Pm, CVS Generic Brand, etc etc. They all claim to be the best, but at the end of the day they all have same ingredient, Diphenhydramine, they just vary on the MG. Some have Acetaminophen, but that is for pain, not sleep, and is bad for your liver. They really seem to knock me out, but I wake up very groggy, and takes me a few hours to get going.
Hylands Calms Forte-It didn’t do anything for me, but my wife uses when she wakes up in the middle of the night to go back to sleep.
There are a bunch of Natural Sleep Aids that I have used that contain Valerian, Melatonin, Chamomile, Kava, 5-HTP, and Theanine.
Most have some combination of some or all together. Some of have worked for me, and they are an alternative to Prescription Medicine. Some sites charge alot, and you might be better to buy them individually at your local GNC,or similar type store.
So in a nutshell, those are some of the things I have tried to get to sleep and stay asleep. I suggest you talk to your Doctor before you try any of the Prescription Drugs, Over The Counter, Homepathic, and other Natural Sleep Aids I have tried.
To a Great Nights Sleep!
